Paleoprecipitation estimates for the Lake Naivasha basin (Kenya) during the last 175 k.y. using a lake-balance model

چکیده
We modeled the two most extreme highstands of Lake Naivasha during the last 175 k.y. to estimate potential precipitation/ evaporation changes in this basin. In a first step, the bathymetry of the paleolakes at f 135 and 9 k.y. BP was reconstructed from sediment cores and surface outcrops. Second, we modeled the paleohydrologic budget during the highstands using a simplified coupled energy mass-balance model. Our results show that the hydrologic and hence the climate conditions at f 135 and 9 k.y. BP were similar, but significantly different from today. The main difference is a f 15% higher value in precipitation compared to the present. An adaptation and migration of vegetation in the cause of climate changes would result in a f 30% increase in precipitation. The most likely cause for such a wetter climate at f 135 and 9 k.y. BP is a more intense intertropical convergence and increased precipitation in East Africa. D 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Long Term Rainfall-runoff- Lake Level Modelling of the Lake Naivasha Basin, Kenya
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, coupled to a GIS, was applied to the Naivasha basin in Kenya, a closed basin experiencing diverse climatic conditions from semi arid to humid, comprises with the only fresh water lake in the grate rift valley. The intent of this study was to estimates the lake water level fluctuations by integrating the SWAT with a water balance model, estimating...
متن کاملMitigating the Water Footprint of Export Cut Flowers from the Lake Naivasha Basin, Kenya
Kenya’s cut-flower industry has been praised as an economic success as it contributed an annual average of US$ 141 million foreign exchange (7 % of Kenyan export value) over the period 1996–2005 and about US$ 352 million in 2005 alone. The industry also provides employment, income and infrastructure such as schools and hospitals for a large population around Lake Naivasha. On the other hand, th...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Driving Force of Hydrodynamics in Lake Naivasha, Kenya
The hydrodynamics in Lake Naivasha, a shallow endorheic lake, are simulated using the Delft3D Flow Module to investigate the major driving forces of hydrodynamics in the lake. The results showed wind as the major forcing. The shallow zones of the lake showed currents movement in the same direction as the wind while the deep zones showed currents movements against the wind direction. These findi...

According to the water resources and climate change and challenges of Urmia Lake basin, which is the discharge and final destination of North West Rivers, a model was presented. Due to climate change and water resources in river basin such as rainfall, climate change in basin that has direct impact on evaporation over water catchment areas and lake water, this model can be provided. In addition...
